CREMASTER 4

by Matthew Barney (1994)

35mm film with sound, 42 mins., courtesy Gladstone Gallery, New York

CREMASTER 4 (1994) was, in fact, the first installment that Matthew Barney filmed. It was produced on a shoestring budget of $200,000 (largely paid for by London arts organization Artangel, New York dealer Barbara Gladstone, and the Foundation Cartier in Paris). The film is set on the Isle of Man — an small island (about three times the size of Washington, D.C.) in the sea between Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales.
